PROGRAMME
The Mid North Group would like to welcome everyone to the Safari and we hope you all enjoy the activities we have planned for you over the weekend. We ask that you show the usual courtesies of garden etiquette while walking around the gardens.
Activities on Saturday are in the Maungatapere and Whangarei area, while on Sunday you will be travelling down SH1, turning off at Waipu and travelling down the coast road to Mangawhai and then on to Kaiwaka.
Saturday 15 October
9.00 am - Saturday A
Meet and greet at the Whangarei Vintage Car Club, at Heritage Park, Maunu Road, Whangarei. Morning Tea - Registration Raffles on sale.
10.00 am - Saturday B
Depart for Minnie Whitehead's garden at 727 Otaika Valley Road, Maungatapere. Minnie's garden is a large country garden amongst native bush, volcanic rocks and features louisiana iris around her ponds. She has a large collection of bromiliads amongst the rocks and also many shrubs and deciduous trees. Plants for sale. Parking up drive. Don't park on the roadside.
11.30 am -Saturday C
Depart for Nolene Hillier's garden at 658 Otaika Valley Road, Mangatapere. Nolene's sense of humour is evident throughout her garden. You will find plantings of louisiana, spurias and tall bearded iris here. The garden is set around an old villa and Nolene's love of old roses is evident as well.
Parking at house. Don't park on the roadside.
12.45 pm - Saturday D
Depart for lunch back to the Whangarei Vintage Car Club's Hall.
Plant sales will be available during the lunch break. Raffle Sales.
2.00 pm - Saturday E
Depart for Gwen Henderson's garden at 56 Austin Road, Maunu. Gwen's love of irises is evident in her garden. She has collections of many different varieties, hopefully her pots of iris cristata are in flower.
Parking on roadside.
3.00 pm - Saturday F
Depart for the Whangarei Quarry gardens, at Russell Road, Whangarei.
Mid North Iris Group has a planting of louisiana iris here and the gardens have developed well. There are many sub tropical plantings at the gardens and there has been a great deal of work done in the last few years.
Parking at the gardens. Afternoon tea and cold drinks will be served. One of our members will have louisiana iris for sale.
6.30 pm - Saturday G
Dinner at the Whangarei Vintage Car Club's Hall.
Raffles will be drawn during the evening.
Sunday 16 October - Map 2
9.00 am - Sunday 1
Depart from Whangarei. Drive on SH1 to the Waipu turnoff and travel down the scenic coast road to Annette Thompson's home at 2159 Cove Road, Mangawhai, where morning tea will be served. Annette has a small garden which includes plantings of tall bearded and pacific coast irises.
Toilet available. Parking inside gate.
10.30 am - Sunday 2
Depart for Janet Prankerd's garden at 2282 Cove Road. Janet and her husband Dave, have an olive orchard. Their house is set below the road and looks out across the orchard and valley. Parking down drive.
11.10 am - Sunday 3
Depart for Jan Grover's garden at 58 Old Waipu Road, Mangawhai. Jan is an artist as well as a gardener. Lovely views here overlooking the estuary. Parking on roadside.
12.00 noon - Sunday 4
Depart for Barbara Hockenhull's garden at 40 Moir Street, Mangawhai. Barbara is a potter and her art is evident throughout her garden. She has a variety of irises growing. Next door is the Smashed Pipi Gallery, where you can view many beautiful items on sale. Barbara and her daughter run the gallery. Parking at gallery.
12.50 pm - Sunday 5
Depart for the Mangawhai Domain at 73 Moir Street, where lunch will be served. Toilets available. Parking at Domain
1.50 pm - Sunday 6
Depart for Chris Quin's garden at 7 Devich Road, off the Kaiwaka Mangawhai Road. Chris has a great variety of subtropical shrubs and trees. She has tall bearded and other species growing. Plant sales will be available. Parking down drive.
2.50 pm - Sunday 7
Depart for Lyn Parker's garden at 63 Kaiwaka Mangawhai Road, Kaiwaka. Lyn has a large country garden where louisianas grow well in the wet areas. She also grows some spurias, siberian and evansia irises. Endeavours to grow tall bearded, but struggles with her conditions. Afternoon tea will be served. Toilet available. Parking down drive at house.
